A Step-by-step Guide To Surrender Your PAN Card | Online and Offline
If you want to surrender your PAN card, then you have to go to your local Income Tax Assessing Officer with the request letter. In This article, we will explain how individuals/companies/institutions can surrender their PAN cards online and offline.
Surrender duplicate pan card
If you have a duplicate PAN, you can surrender the PAN card in the following two ways:

How to Surrender Duplicate Pan Card Online
Follow these steps to surrender your PAN card online:
- Visit the website of NSDL
- From the “Application Type” drop-down, select the option “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)”
- Fill the form completely and click on the 'Submit' button. After submission of the form, your request will be registered and a token number will be received and sent to the email id, which you have mentioned in the application
- Note down your token number for future reference and continue with the process by clicking on the “Continue with PAN Application Form” button given below
- Now you will be directed to a new webpage. At the top of the new webpage, select the option “Submit scanned images through e-Sign”
- At the bottom-left of the page, mention the PAN number that you wish to retain
- Next, fill in your personal information, contact and other information in the form
- At the bottom of the next page, mention the additional PAN that you want to surrender and then click on the 'Next' button
- On the next screen, select the proof of identity, residence and date of birth that you wish to submit
- Upload the scanned copy of your photo, signature and required documents. In case a person is requesting for surrender of PAN, they should personally sign the acknowledgment receipt, otherwise they should be signed by the authorized officer. For example, partner of a company and partner in case of partnership firm/LLP
- After submitting your information, you should recheck your application form. Verify your details and make necessary payment wherever required or proceed to make payment
- Make the required payment through Demand Draft, Credit Card, Debit Card or Internet Banking
- You will see a downloadable receipt once the payment is successful. Save and print the receipt for future reference and as proof of payment
- Send copy of receipt to NSDL e-Gov along with two photographs
- Before sending the receipt, label the envelope with 'Application for PAN cancellation' and receipt number
- Send the receipt with your signature along with demand draft (if required) and required documents (proof of existing PAN (if any), proof, identity, date of birth) to the following address.
How to Surrender Duplicate Pan Card Offline
- Fill the form “Request For New PAN Card Or/And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data”. Use this link to download the form: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/downloads/pan/download/PAN-CR-Form_NSDL%20e-Gov_01.06.16.pdf
- Submit PAN form at nearest NSDL center along with a copy of required documents
- Once the form is submitted, you will get a slip, which has to be sent to the NSDL office. This letter should reach the office within 15 days of applying
- Also, send a letter to the officer listing the duplicate PAN information requesting its cancellation. The Assessing Officer may demand an affidavit stating that the person does not have any other PAN card except the one which is in use
- You can also meet the nearest Income Tax Officer of your area and submit a letter requesting them to have duplicate PAN and cancel the same. Then, post or submit the letter to the nearest office and keep the receipt number.
How to surrender the PAN card of a dead person
On the death of the PAN cardholder, his/her relatives will have to write a letter to the Income Tax Officer of the concerned area, stating the reason for surrender of the PAN card (death of the holder) and the death certificate. Some other information is also required to be entered in the letter like name, PAN card number, date of birth, etc. The procedure to surrender the PAN card is the same in case of the demise of Indian Residents, NRIs and Foreign Nationals.
How to Surrender PAN Card of a Firm / Partnership Firm / Company
The PAN card issued in the name of the Firm / Partnership Firm / Company is required to be surrendered in the event of its shutdown or closure.
How to Surrender PAN Card of Firm / Partnership Firm / Company – Online
- Visit NSDL Website
- Fill the online form with the required information
- Enter the PAN number to be canceled in item 11 of the form
- Check the form and proceed to pay the required amount through credit/debit card or net banking
- After submitting the form, take a printout of the receipt
- Attach the receipt with the company's dissolution agreement (in case the company is going to be wound up) and a copy of the PAN card that you wish to surrender and a covering letter stating that you wish to surrender the PAN card
- Post to the address “NSDL e-Governance Income Tax PAN Services Unit” along with required documents
- You will receive a notification once the request is complete
How to Surrender PAN Card of Firm / Partnership Firm / Company – Offline
- A letter to the Income Tax Officer under whose jurisdiction the firm/company was filing its tax returns should be written stating that the firm/company is being wound up, thus surrendering the PAN card
- Along with the letter, some other documents are also required, such as a copy of the agreement for which the firm/company is being wound up, PAN card, and receipt of the return to be filed for the period of consideration
- The letter and other documents will be presented to the Income Tax Officer and the receipt received in return will be kept for future use.
