PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a 10-digit alphanumeric code that contains all the taxable finance history of the cardholder. An individual can have only one PAN as per Income Tax laws. Income Tax Department has collected more than 11 lakhs
Duplicate and fake PAN cards have been deactivated. However, there may be instances where a genuine PAN was deactivated. In cases where you have lost your PAN card, it is possible to reactivate it. You will need to submit the required documents for your application to be processed again.
PAN Card Activation Process
If your PAN has been deactivated by the IT department. It will be difficult to do cash transactions of more than Rs. 50,000/- You will not be able to log in to the e-filing website or file ITR.
There are many other things that will become almost impossible for you to do once your PAN card is deactivated. You can activate the PAN card again by following the procedure given below:
- Write a letter to Assessing Officer (AO) to reactivate your deactivated card
- Submit an attested copy of the Deactivated PAN Card
- Fill indemnity bond in favor of Income Tax Department
- You can also submit the ITR filed using the deactivated PAN for the last three years
- Submit letters and documents to the regional income tax department office
- It takes around 15 days for reactivation of PAN card by Income Tax Department
How to deactivate pan card
- Visit NSDL Portal for PAN Application
- Select “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data” from the “Application Type” section
- Submit the application and note down the “Token Number”
- Continue to fill the form but do not select any tick box (Tick box is selected for making changes in PAN data)
- Now submit Aadhaar and e-sign it using Aadhaar (Optional)
- At the end of the form, enter the PAN you want to retain
- In the next section, give details of any or all of the PAN cards that you wish to surrender
- Now submit the application form and pay online using a Debit/Credit card or Netbanking
- You must download the submitted application for future reference
- If you fill the form using the paperless method, you will have to e-sign using Aadhaar OTP method
- If you wish to send the document to NSDL, take a printout of the application and send it to NSDL mentioning “Application for PAN Cancellation” on the envelope.

- Fake (Fake) PAN Card – Income Tax Department deactivates those PAN cards from time to time

- PAN Card Deactivation for Foreigners – In the case of foreigners who do not want to continue with financial transactions in India, the Income Tax Department deactivates the PAN card.
- PAN Card Deactivation for Deceased – Income Tax Department deactivates the PAN of the deceased cardholders when their heirs or nominees file a formal application for deactivation along with a copy of the death certificate of the deceased.
How to check pan card status
- Visit the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department
- Click on “Verify your PAN Details”
- Fill in the required details like PAN, Full Name, Date of Birth, Status and click on the “Submit” button
- If your PAN is deactivated, then you can apply to activate the PAN card.
